HNZ BLACK TUIS HEAD TO BRISBANE

The New Zealand Womens handball team the ‘Black Tuis’ head across the Tasman to compete in the 2009 Pacific Cup from the 25th-31st May, 2009.
This year sees a younger, fit team, with experienced senior Players, Ariaana Randall, Langi Winitana, Bella Fruean and Te Hau Winitana being the backbone of the squad.

HNZ BLACK TUIS BRISBANE AUSTRALIA 2009

The Black Tui’s might not have come home with the silverware but they certainly sent a message to the rest of Oceania at the recent Pacific cup tournament that was held in the last week of May in Brisbane, Australia that they will be back.

The Tui’s captain said although they had a inexperienced team the girls came together very quickly both on and off the court.” and was excited with new blood in the team, and with time was confident that next time around the girls would be better prepared, and ready to get the results that they want.

"The tournament saw some great performances from Ariana Randall, who was responsible for holding the HNZ team together throughout the week, as injuries started to take their toll on the weary HNZ team. Randall provided outstanding leadership and backed this up with her consistent performance on court. Other up and coming talent from within the HNZ ranks was Winger Lauren Ensor and Goal Keeper Leah Te Iringa.

For many in the HNZ team this was their first taste of high level handball, and In spite of the score lines, this certainly hasn't deterred them from wanting more. In fact this has provided them with more motivation and commitment to improving themselves individually and as a team.

We look forward to working with these ladies throughout 2009, and into 2010.

HNZ FRIDAY 03 JULY 2009

Handball New Zealand has continued to develop Handball at grass roots including almost 52 primary and 23 secondary schools nationwide. This contact will increase in the coming calendar year and continue a long tradition of national and regional schools competitions since 1994.

One of these is Hutt Valley High school, Wellington largest secondary school with over 1800 pupils. HVHS commenced playing the sport back in 1993 and many national team players including the Winitana sisters started their handball career from HVHS teams.
Marie Winitana and Langi Winitana both went on to play for overseas clubs in Norway, Spain, Korea and Japan.

Through this strong relationship with HVHS and HNZ we continue to develop the sport in the school with the Help of HVHS Sports Co-ordinator Jude Glenny who has been an absolute key person in making sure that the students get to the lunch time practices.

HVHS will continue to practice every lunchtime in their preparation to play against Local colleges in the ‘2009 Fast and Furious’ Secondary Schools competition.

One added incentive is games against the Under 18 Australian Team touring New Zealand in October 2009.

Interesting new college links include Te Aute, Hato Petera, Hato Paora, Aotea College, Baradene College and Heretaunga College.

HNZ LEISURE ACTIVE HUTT CITY COUNCILHNZ- News

In association with Hutt City Councils 'Leisure Active Department', HNZ  will be running another “TRY UR HAND AT HANDBALL” in February 2010.

This time we thought that we would have one day for children and parents, and one day for all other Adults so that all those that are interested can have a go.

This is part of a Leisure Active initiative to 'GET OUT & GET ACTIVE' and make the most of the sun and greenery that we are spoilt for here in New Zealand.

Although Handball is normally played indoors, HNZ thought it was a great idea and are happy to be continuing our strong relationship and involvement with a organization that promotes being Active!!!

HNZ HNZ INTRODUCES HANDBALL TO OTAKIHNZ- News

Only forty five minutes North of Wellington is where you will find the sunny town of Otaki, which as of last week became the newest edition to the Handball New Zealand Family.

HNZ Development Officers spent the day coaching 30 very enthusiastic Maori students from the ages of 11-15years old, at Te Kura - A - Iwi o Whakatipuranga Rua Mano.

The students speak fluent Te Reo Maori (Maori language), and this provided HNZ development officers with challenges to describe exactly how the game was played. Regardless the session was successful and conducted in an appropriate 'Tikanga Maori' - culturally appropriate model, with both teachers and students being totally supportive and enjoying the session.

The students had the chance to learn the basics of passing, catching, dribbling, shooting and defence. Students were then split into teams and encouraged to have a go at putting it all together. Some of the teachers even gave it a go!!!

Kura Kaupapa Teacher (Gina Wratten) had heard about Handball and the amazing opportunities the Sport has to offer. Gina approached a fellow colleague who had strong connections to the Lower Hutt Based Club - 'Te Aroha Eels' , to request assistance to teach the basics of the game. Handball New Zealand were able to effectively provide this support as part of their National Development Program.

“This is a sport that I think our kids will enjoy, they like the contact aspect of the game and it compliments a lot of the skills that they use in their chosen sports” -Gina Wratten

HNZ is working hard to get Handball running amongst the Kura Kaupapa Maori across New Zealand by 2010.
